Inclusive Language
Training
Words matter. The language we use every day can have a big impact on feelings of inclusion at work. That’s why we created Inclusive Language Training: using and understanding inclusive language is a straightforward and concrete way to help everyone feel more comfortable at work.
Organizations are focusing a great deal on diversity, equity, and inclusion – with good reason. But, for many team members, engaging with this topic is really challenging. Even finding the right words to discuss diversity and difference can leave team members at a loss. While some organizations struggle with offensive language, others have developed a “call-out culture,” where people feel afraid to speak up for fear of using the wrong word.
This two-hour, instructor-led course tackles these sticky issues in a concrete, accessible way. Participants leave with greater confidence and skill around how to use inclusive language and how to navigate the inevitable situations when they slip up and make a mistake.
What is Inclusive Language?
Inclusive language is an ever-evolving practice of selecting words and phrases that are the most empowering and inclusive – and conversely, avoiding words and phrases that are exclusionary or that carry discriminatory connotations.
The goal of inclusive language is to help people feel seen and respected.
Our philosophy around inclusive language, and DEI more broadly, is that no one is perfect at this. We are all learning and we do best when we keep an open mind, listen to each other, and learn together.
Let’s learn to be more inclusive by focusing on language, together.
